ANSWERED

Of course, as you know, these are the answers to the genetics review questions given in class. you can email me with questions by clicking the mail box below.

Section 1: Proteins and Genes

  2. 4

  3. 2

  4. 2

  5. 3

  6. 3

  7. 1

  8. 1

  10. 3

  11. 4

  12. 3  but don't worry about this one

  13. 3

  14. 2

  15. DNA is self replicating and codes for proteins

  16. Each new cell needs a complete copy of DNA. A copy must be made so that each new cell has the instructions on how to make all of the proteins necessary to maintain homeostasis.

Section 2: Environmental control of genes

  1. 3

  2. 2

  3. 1

  4. 4

  5. Temperature, light and moisture (as well as others).

Section 3: Genetic disorders

  1. 1 (Don't worry about this one)

  2. 4

  3. 2

  4. 1

  5. 3

  6. Our genome is enormous, DNA is somewhat fragile, most traits are controlled by more than one gene and the expression of some genes are affected by environmental factors. Information on patterns of human inheritance is obtained by studying other organisms as well as doing pedigree analyses.

Section 4: Mendelian Genetics

  1. 2

  2. 2

  3. 4

  4. 4

  5. 4

  6. 2

  7. 1

  8. 3

  10. 1 (this is a horrible question)

  11. 3

  2. 3

  3. 1

  4. 4

  5. 3

  6. 1

  7. 1

  8. See Punnet square below

  9. Girls have a second X chromosome that could carry a dominant allele to make her a carrier. Males, with only one X chromosome cannot be carriers; they either have it or they don't. Come up with your own Punnet square for this.
