Oceans 12 1/2
Travel Guide and Brochure Project
Yes, it's time for the first of the Oceanography projects. For this first one you'll be creating a travel brochure. You've probably seen them as we do live in a vacation destination.
Each one of you (No, this cannot be done in partners) should have been assigned a body of water. You should have done some research on your body of water already. What are some other characteristics that are typical in your body of water? What types of organisms will people see there even if they have to look REAL close.
A typical travel brochure is made from a standard, 8.5" x 11" paper folded in thirds with lots of groovy pictures designed to attract tourists and give them an idea of what to expect on their vacation. Although that is typical you need not be bounded by those norms. Be creative. You may need to use a larger paper to fit all of the info needed. Remember, you're trying to identify what makes the region so special and worth visiting. Your brochure will need to cover the following bases to receive full credit:
Where are we going? What countries have access? A small map might be appropriate.
Natural history? Identify several interesting organisms common and to the area. Any cool facts about their biology?
How'd it get there? What natural forces formed the region? Are those forces still going on? What's the weather like. What types of clothing should someone bring? Are there any interesting bottom features (mid-ocean ridges, seamounts, etc.)? How about beaches.
Where are all of the people? What cities are on it? What is the relationship between the locals and the area? Are there other people that use or are trying to use the area for other activities (farming, ranching).
What? Me worry? What are the dangers of visiting? What kind of precautions should I take?
What's it look like? Pictures, pictures pictures.
Other cool stuff. The more information....
What does this say? Yes, neatness, legibility and creativity as well as timeliness of the project will count. Graphics are all well and good but the information is most important. Make it look professional.
Keep track of what resources you use for this. You will need to turn in a Bibliography of sorts with your brochure. MLA format would be most impressive (and get you full credit). That's about it. I'll give you until next Friday to do this. No, we probably will not be in the computer lab again before then. Use your time wisely.
